Could diet and weight be affecting my health?

This may seem like a stupid question but let me finish :) Although my BMI is at a good level I am slightly overweight (quite a lot of fat around my stomach). I do not exercise much (lack of motivation + knee problem + asthma) and I don't eat great (I am student :D). I would like to get in better shape and I hope to soon but I just want to know how my current condition could be affecting my health.

Recently I have been experiencing some chest pains. These can be quite sharp. They vary too. One recent bad one felt like a pocket of air trapped below my lung that was going to pop. Normally I experience them below/at the bottom of my lungs. I used to get the odd pain but recently they have gotten more frequent. Could this be related to my health/fitness?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but some of the advice given here really bothers me :\

Now, If I was to go through with some of the advice given to me here, I wouldn't be eating anything except for grilled chicken and lettuce. Some people tell other to completely eliminate important food groups! Don't eat brown bread or any bread don't eat this don't eat nuts they have a lot of fat don't eat cheese don't eat tomatoes oh, and of course; don't eat fruits they have too much sugar!

Are you kidding me?! Many of these foods are important for a balanced diet! Nobody said they should be eating tons of it, but to completely eliminate it?

It's something else when someone asks about their weight, and get called fat even when their weight is medically right, sometimes perfect for their height. Example: If someone who has a BMI of 21-22 asks if their weight is good, someone comes and answers with: No ur fat because I am your height and weigh 25 pounds less than you are and I'm not anorexic!

So your weight = a guide to everyone?

The asker might be a 30 year old mother and the person who answered was probably a 15 year old who does sports for 5+ hours a day. You can't compare both lifestyles! A 30 year old mother shouldn't have to weigh the same as a 15 year old as long as she's at a healthy weight.

Something else I've noticed, is the condescending tone of most advice/answers. I would understand that if it was one of those ridiculous questions like: "How do I lose 30 lbs in a week?" types.. but no, it's that way even for regular, weight-loss & fitness questions. Do you think that being condescending and mean instead of motivating will give that person the motivation to start taking care of their health? I dunno, I just don't think that that's the right way to help someone.

One last thing, Why so many scam spammers! Is YAHOO aware of this? Do you guys report them? maybe if we do, they'll go away :\

I'm a personal trainer, and i have been for more than 5 years but that was all individual training. I'm teaching a womens fitness class starting next month, and i already have most of the class designed but i wanted to hear from some women and do a quick survey

Religion and social status have always been deal breakers in relationships. But for those navigating today's dating pool, the currents may just have gotten rougher. No longer is it enough to share an interest in piña colada or getting caught in the rain—today's singles want to know whether potential partners are fit and how often they work out, among other personal details. And then there's the friction between vegans and vegetarians.

It might sound counterintuitive; after all, neither group eats meat. But for many vegans—who also eschew animal products like the dairy and eggs eaten by vegetarians—love may not be enough to conquer ideology. "I'm in a relationship with a murderer," bemoans Carl, one of many vegans who wrote in to the "Vegan Freak" podcast for romantic advice. Carl, who didn't give his last name, says his girlfriend is a regular vegetarian, and their differences are becoming a major source of tension. In the vegan world that's not an uncommon dilemma. Bob Torres, one of the show's hosts, says that dating and relationships are two of the most popular topics on the podcast, which deals with all things vegan.

Vegans are hardly the only partner-seekers with health concerns. Online dating site Match.com has noted a steady rise in interest in the topic among its 15 million members. In 2004 about 15 percent of its members said they exercised regularly. Among today's members, about 43 percent say they exercise three to four times each week. That's more people declaring their devotion to exercise than declaring their religion on the Web site. Food has also become a concern; just under half the site's members want their partner to have a healthy diet, compared to 12 percent three years ago. And these are issues that relationship counselor Ian Kerner, who works with the site, thinks can cause more serious conflict in relationships than political or philosophical differences. "I think people can get past a lot of intellectual debates, because that's what makes opposites attract," he says. But getting past a fitness fanatic/couch potato clash? "I can't tell you how many times I hear people breaking up over things like this," says Kerner. "It's a lot about sharing values, about how they spend their time. It's both scheduling conflicts and different value systems."

Vegans and vegetarians can get caught in worse dating dilemmas. For many vegetarians and almost all vegans, their distaste for meat runs much deeper than their taste buds; it's an outward expression of their ethical and moral beliefs about animal cruelty and responsible living. Take John Cunningham, who lives in Baltimore. "If I don't have to contribute to cruelty in society and this world, I would like to abstain from that," he says. He's been a vegan since 2001, and he married his long-term girlfriend (a vegetarian) this past summer. He understands the critical role veganism can play in dating and relationships. "If someone is going to make such a large change in the way they eat, the motivation behind that has to be serious," he says. "That can't be taken causally when entering into a relationship."

Not surprisingly, a number of niche dating sites have popped up to respond to veggie dating demands. Vegan Passions, Veggie Fishing and Planet Earth Singles are all sites that cater to environmentally conscious daters. Planet Earth Singles launched in April (fittingly, on Earth Day) and already boosts 23,000 eco-friendly members, many of whom are among the nation's 1.4 million vegans or 4.7 million vegetarians. "If somebody is for the environmental movement, they want to support it on all levels, even in their relationships," says Jill Crosby, the founder of Planet Earth Singles.

But it still ain't easy dating green. While these niche sites do boost memberships in the thousands, they're nowhere near the size of dating goliaths like Match.com or eHarmony, and no site has come along to unify vegans the way JDate has done for Jewish singles. "I know it sounds corny," says Paul Williams, a 35-year-old vegetarian in Atlantic City, N.J. "But basically I want to date someone with a good heart that can understand why I've chosen to be a vegetarian." Finding a woman to share tofu for two is even tougher when you're not near large urban centers that have an established vegetarian community and the restaurants and bookstores that often go with it. "It's very difficult," says Williams of finding a vegetarian mate. "I go to all the generic Web sites, like MySpace and Plenty of Fish, and I was a paid member of eHarmony for a bit. They rarely matched me up with any vegetarians."

Commercial weight loss diets are all similarly effective at 6 months, and those with support are more effective at 12 months, according to the results of the randomized BBC "diet trials" reported in the June 3 issue of the BMJ. Participants in these trials were filmed as part of a BBC television series.

"Most adults in the United States diet at some time, and trends in the United Kingdom are similar," write Helen Truby, MD, from the University of Surrey, Guildford, United Kingdom, and colleagues. "Long term success rates are poor, with 50% of weight loss being regained within one year. Although commercial diets provide consumers with a plethora of choice, data on their comparative efficacy are limited."

Using a community-based sample of otherwise healthy overweight and obese adults, this 6-month, multicenter, unblended controlled trial compared 4 popular commercial weight loss programs with a control group. These diets were the Slim-Fast plan (a meal replacement approach), Weight Watchers pure points program (an energy-controlled diet with weekly group meetings), Dr Atkins' new diet revolution (a self-monitored low carbohydrate eating plan), and Rosemary Conley's eat-yourself-slim diet and fitness plan (a low-fat diet and a weekly group exercise class). Primary endpoints were changes in weight and body fat during 6 months.

Compared with the control group, all diets were associated with a significant loss of body fat and weight during 6 months, but outcomes in the 4 diet groups did not differ significantly from each other. Intent-to-treat analysis revealed that average weight loss was 5.9 kg, and average fat loss was 4.4 kg during 6 months. Although the Atkins diet resulted in significantly higher weight loss during the first 4 weeks, it was no more or less effective than the other diets by the end of the study.

At 12 months, 158 participants (54% of the original sample) returned data, and only 58 (45%) were still compliant with their assigned diets (9 to Atkins, 20 to Weight Watchers, 9 to Slim-Fast, 20 to Rosemary Conley). More participants in the unsupported programs (Atkins diet and Slim-Fast) withdrew than in the supported programs (P = .04), and weight rebound after the initial 6 months was higher in the unsupported programs. All diets resulted in a clinically useful weight loss of around 10% after 12 months in participants who had kept to their original diet.

"Clinically useful weight loss and fat loss can be achieved in adults who are motivated to follow commercial diets for a substantial period," the authors write. "Given the limited resources for weight management in the NHS [National Health System], healthcare practitioners should discuss with their patients programmes known to be effective."

Study limitations include varied compliance with each diet, small number of participants, and effect of media interest on motivation to meet goal weights and patients' expectations of weight loss.

One of the authors has disclosed receiving consulting fees for serving on the scientific advisory panel of Slimming World.

In an accompanying editorial, David Arterburn, MD, MPH, from the Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle, Wash, notes the high costs of some commercial diets and the low rate of ongoing compliance with the assigned diets at 1 year.

"The challenge to researchers in obesity is to take weight loss studies, especially those involving commercial programmes and private funding, to the next level," Dr Arterburn writes. "'Diet Trials II' would serve us best by evaluating long term health outcomes, cost effectiveness, and novel strategies of improving adherence and weight maintenance. Such strategies might include economic incentives for participants and researchers collaborating with employers and healthcare providers."

Another try for inspiration/motivation?

OK, not to be ungrateful, everyone who answered my first question about needing motivation/inspiration for weight loss/getting in shape. But when I ask for motivation/inspiration, that’s what I mean. I don’t mean nutrition advice or fitness tips. I have plenty of those already—books, magazines, T.V. shows, health gurus on talk shows, etc,… So I’m trying again. My thing is, I have bad allergies/asthma, so I almost can’t do anything outside without it killing me. I have nowhere in my house right now (till I get my own apartment) to do exercises or a video or whatever. I’m working on it. I’m going to try to get an air conditioner put in my room as soon as possible.

However, there’s also my leg pain and other pains that I have all the time (and yes, I know I need to go to the doctor, but need money for that and am working on it), so it’s hard to come home from my full time job, then from running errands/grocery shopping, etc,.. and find the energy to do exercise, even if I had a place to do it. Also, the eating—I know I need to change my eating habits—it’s just very daunting because I love junk food—I don’t like fruits and vegetables and so on. I’m used to a sugary diet, which I know is bad, but I can’t imagine not having it. And with my allergies wiping me out all the time and having to take benadryl for it, I need my caffeine from my Cokes just to stay awake during the day.

So what I need is some inspirational words to help me be able to push through those barriers. Or maybe a personal story of someone who faced these types of obstacles and found a way through them. Thanks, in advance.
